NZVT laboratory testing of supplements for doping-free substances for safe sports nutrition

As a recreational or amateur athlete, you want to get the best out of yourself. You might be using protein powders, vitamins, creatine, or other supplements to support your training. But did you know that these products can sometimes contain unwanted and even dangerous substances?

Why safe supplements are important

Research paints a worrying picture: a significant proportion of dietary supplements may be contaminated with substances classified as doping agents. Substances that are not listed on the label at all. In a study by the Doping Authority into high-risk supplements, 38% of the products tested were found to be contaminated with doping substances (https://www.dopingautoriteit.nl/nieuws/algemeen/item/8075/Resultaten+onderzoek+sportvoedingssupplementenBut it's not just about doping. In May 2025, the NVWA found dangerous substances and extremely high doses of caffeine in pre-workout products that can harm health.https://www.nvwa.nl/nieuws-en-media/nieuws/2025/05/15/nvwa-vindt-schadelijke-stoffen-en-erg-veel-cafeine-in-pre-workout-supplementen).

Pollution can end a career for elite athletes, but it is also crucial for recreational athletes to know what they are actually taking in. The Dutch Quality Assurance System for Sports Nutrition Supplements (NZVT) offers an extra level of certainty for this.

The NZVT hallmark

The NZVT is a unique Dutch quality system that has been checking supplements for safety since 2003. The Doping Authority, NOC*NSF, and industry organisations work together to offer athletes extra reassurance about what they are consuming.

The system is rigorous and reliable. Every product batch is tested individually in specialised laboratories before it is released onto the market. Only after approval is the product awarded the NZVT logo and its batch number recorded in the online database. This batch-specific check is essential, as each production batch can differ.

Important to know: Not all supplements are tested by the NZVT. This does not automatically mean that untestered products are unsafe. Many supplements simply comply with the regular Dutch food safety regulations. However, the NZVT mark offers an additional layer of control, specifically aimed at excluding doping-intended substances.

Advantages of NZVT approved supplements

Extra securityNZVT-certified supplements are tested batch-by-batch for the absence of doping-prohibited substances, in addition to the regular legal food safety requirements.

Peace of mindYou know that additional checks have been carried out. This is especially valuable if you're taking part in competitions or simply want maximum certainty.

Full transparencyYou can check if your specific product has been tested and approved per batch number via the NZVT database.

Proven effectivenessThe system shows that the risk of contamination is real. Each year, a few batches are rejected that would otherwise have come onto the market.

International recognitionThe NZVT is considered the gold standard and is globally recognised for its thorough approach.

Although originally developed for elite athletes, NZVT-approved products are increasingly available to recreational athletes. It's a choice for extra assurance, especially relevant if you train seriously or compete.

How to recognise NZVT supplements

NZVT-approved products can be recognised by the NZVT logo on the packaging. This logo indicates that all batches of that product are tested. Look for this logo when purchasing if you want to choose extra assurance.

Would you like to know more about which brands and products have NZVT-approved batches, or do you want to verify your specific batch? You can do this via the NZVT database at https://www.dopingautoriteit.nl/programmas/nzvt. You will usually find the batch number on the back of the packaging next to the barcode.

Whether you go to the gym three times a week, participate in local competitions, or just want to stay fit, NZVT-certified supplements offer you an extra layer of certainty. It's not an obligation, but it is a sensible choice if you want full transparency and control over what you're taking.
